Introduction

From the beautiful beaches to the expansive deserts, the huge cities to the tents of the nomads, the information technology industry to ancient architecture, Egypt is a land of stark contrasts offering great sites to tourists and opportunities for businesses.

Egypt is the most populous country in North Africa and its mega-cities, Cairo and Alexandria, are among the world’s largest.  Nigeria is the only African country with a larger population.  This enormous population base provides for a robust business environment for locals and foreign entrepreneurs and investors. The largest employer in the country has been the government,  providing more than half of the jobs patronised by Egyptian youth.  A major result of recent revolution is opening the door for the privatization of many of the government agencies and services.

The tourist industry blossoms in the desert and on the coast.  The cities offer grand bazaars,  Mosques, and great food.  To miss the crowded streets and lively night spots is to miss modern Egypt.  The real attraction of Egypt is its ancient offerings: the pyramids and pillars. Egypt is the home of one of the most ancient civilizations in the world and has been a unified country for more than five thousand years.  Remnants of the past can be seen everywhere.

Egypt’s land mass is huge, covering nearly 400,000 square miles, yet most of it is desert. Despite the large tracts of dry land, Egypt has a population of more the 80 million, nearly one-quarter of the population of the United States.  Cairo and Alexandria are two of the most densely populated cities in the world.

Arabic is the official language.  English and French can be heard in urban centers.

In early 2011 Egypt, especially Cairo, experienced a revolution accompanied by heavy violence.  This was an internal conflict that has been de-escalated.  There is little to no danger to foreigners in the country.
