South Africa’s Prison Babies

SOUTH AFRICA PRISON BABIESThe BBC reporter Nomsa Maseko has filed an interesting report on South Africa’s prison babies. The thrust of the report revolves around how the South Africa prison service is making efforts to provide mothers and their children in prison with a better life. The obvious advantage is that the natural bond that is often found between a mother and their baby is kept in tact.
Here is an excerpt:
“The mothers have wronged society and given birth to their children here, [but] the children should not take the responsibility or be punished,” South Africa’s Cape Times newspaper quotes Ms Mapisa-Nqakula as saying. “So this is in their best interest – not to make prisons more comfortable,” she said. Similar units will be opened at prisons across the country in the coming weeks.
