Remember the documentary – The Nigerian Connection? Well that documentary was an eye opener to the prostitution tragedy that has befallen a small minority of young African women in Europe.
The photos by photographer Paolo Patrizi about migration linked to prostitution below are a montage that reveals, in a very sad way, the tribulations of some of these young African women, some of whom had no idea that they were being lured into Europe to work as prostitutes.
The Amazing Stories Around the World website features a rather powerful collection of photographs depicting some of the deplorable conditions and lifestyles of some of the prostitutes.
Here is an excerpt from the story:
The phenomenon of foreign women, who line the roadsides of Italy, has become a notorious fact of Italian life. These women work in sub-human conditions; they are sent out without any hope of regularizing their legal status and can be easily transferred into criminal networks.
Many are Africans working as prostitutes to send money home to their families. For nearly twenty years the women of Benin City, a town in the state of Edo in the south-central part of Nigeria, have been going to Italy to work in the sex trade and every year successful ones have been recruiting younger girls to follow them.
