
Set in the 17th century, this 1977 Sembene film narrates the story of the ‘Ceddo’, an indigenous African Wolof-speaking ethnic group who tried to preserve their culture and traditions against the rising power of Christianity and Islam, by way of the slave trade, and the desperate measures they resorted to to do this.
The film was banned in Senegal upon its release.
