Every protest has a defining moment. A few months ago Mohamed Bouazizi, a Tunisian fruit and vegetable vendor set himself alight and in the process triggered the “Arab Spring” which resulted in the toppling of some of the world’s longest serving North African dictators.
One such moment occured in Egypt a few hours ago as protesters demonstrated against the country’s continuous military rule. As is usually the case with these moments the ferocity and brutality involved beggars belief. In the video below Egyptian military personnel under a hail of stones from protesters, in Cairo’s Tahrir Square are seen pulling women across the pavement by their hair, knocking off their headscarves and kicking some in the head until they lost consciousness.
The image that has caught the world’s attention is that of a woman now being dubbed the “Blue Bra” protester who seemed to bear the brunt of what is arguably one of the worst forms of brutality against a protester caught on video.
