Spacecom, is a company that recently launched a satellite into space. That in itself is not that unusual or noteworthy these days. What is noteworthy about this venture is that the satellite, named AMOS 5 is as Spacecom puts it ”at the forefront of Africa’s emerging satellite services market.”
The company’s CEO stated recently that ”This is an important event for us and will allow us to provide quality service to the entire continent of Africa … The satellite has excellent coverage and capacity and will provide solutions for the rapidly developing continent … Spacecom is looking forward to providing Africa with quality communications services.”
The quality of data transmission services and television programming should in theory be improved with this addition. On a continent that is experiencing significant growth satellite services such as these will be needed. Spacecom is an Israeli company. This would have been a much more exciting news had this initiative been borne out of the foresight of companies on the continent. Perhaps that will come soon.
