Nigerians angry at latest church bombings

Christmas Day in Nigeria saw the carnage that has often been brought to the streets of Nigeria by the Islamist group Boko Haram rachet up to new levels. Certainly the bombings of police stations and military facilities by the group has been somewhat of a norm. Targeting church goers on what is a special day for most Christians sent a message not only to Nigerians but also to the international community that Boko Haram were intent on destabilising Nigeria and possibly its environs.

The attack is reported to have claimed 40 lives so far with (see video below) entire families killed in the Church blast at Nigeria’s Abuja.

The anger should of course be aimed at Boko Haram. However, when Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan stated recently that “The bombings are a burden that Nigerians must live with” one couldn’t help but feel that the Commander in Chief has lost the mettle to deal effectively with the attacks on his people. That sense of helplessness and frustration is becoming just as important a source of anger as the attacks themselves.
