Kabila declared winner of DRC elections

Kabila has been declared winner of elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo by the country’s Electoral Commission. Violence and allegations of widespread fraud marred the election. Details of all the Presidential candidates and a short report on the violence can be seen here.

The announcement of the election results had been delayed initially for  a 48-hour period, which was then extended for more that 72-hours.

The AP reports that the provisional results published by the Electoral Commission handed victory to President Joseph Kabila who won another term with 49 percent of the 18.14 million votes cast.

The elections were only the second elections held in the DRC since the nation was torn apart by several years of warfare that ended in 2003.
