Kenya’s Konza Technology City

Thanks to the makings of what looks like a vibrant tech community, leadership and government financial backing, Kenya is set to develop Konza Technology City. Konza Technology City is described as a “state-sponsored project sitting on a 5,000-acre parcel of land expected to be the centre of Business Process Outsourcing activity and software development in the region.”

The project is in the design phase but already businesses have started developing their own products and services to cater for the 200,000-strong workforce expected to work in the city.

This is a truly impressive development on a scale that has arguably not been seen before anywhere in Africa. However, it might be worth noting that, the founder of Face Book, Mark Zuckerberg stated last week that perhaps the most famous “Tech City” “Silicon Valley was not necessary for startups“.

The video below illustrates the growing economic importance of Kenya, a country that is predicted to reach middle income status in 2020. It also provides some commentary on Kenya’s huge technology advancements in the last few years and explains how the Konza Technology City fits into the government’s overall development plans.

The commercial engine of the new city is The BPO Techno Park, a cluster of technology businesses, financial services firms and other enterprises centred on the state of the art business and science park.

The CBD includes a small stadium, public entertainment venues, concert halls and sports facilities.

The central business district is a significant draw for global firms. It includes space for a landmark shopping mall with major retailers, office blocks built to the standards multinational companies expect and hotels designed for international business travellers and tourists
