Africa on Google+

Google+ is the hot new social network around. In just a few months, Google+ has  amassed more than 40 million users, and it is continuing to grow. Apart from being able to set up personal accounts on Google+, the site also introduced a “business” or “brand” page for marketers and brands around the world.

So far reviews of Google+ have been largely positive. The site continues to unveil new features regularly and many experts believe it will pose a threat to the social media dominance of Facebook and Twitter. Here are some of the reviews.

Egidio Vaz, a communication and web marketing specialist from Mozambique who recently joined Google+ said, “well, am not used to it yet but I think it can add value to my day-to-day job.”

Kenyan multimedia journalist, Claire Mitchell, gave her first impressions. “One thing like about it (Google+) is that I can have a video conversation with more than one person unlike Facebook where you restricted to one person at a time.

An ardent social network user from Zambia, Irwin Fox Mainza said, “I have signed up to Google+ and I love it already. From what I have experienced so far, Google+ has potential to outdo Facebook. I just hope it will be able to allow connection with other applications. Good stuff so far.”

“Google+ is quite innovative. I have been exploring, enjoying and keeping up to scratch with it daily since it surfaced. For those who think it’s another Facebook, they should rethink and take a better look at it. For me, it’s the best social network that makes life enjoyable with some clicks,” Kent Mensah, editor, Africanews.com also added.

Google+ rest of the world Reviews (via Mashable)

“Google+ is a much cleaner way to selectively share data with others. As Google integrates more of their other cloud products, like Documents, Calendar, and Reader, you’re going to see it become one of the primary means of absorbing the data streaming from the Internet and sharing it with others.” ~ Jason Poggioli

“It’s the combination of being able to share based on (hopefully!) mutual interests with the ability to get exposure to interesting people and ideas. The relationship doesn’t really have to be two way, but it doesn’t all have to be public.” ~ Holly Henry

“For some reason, the level of engagement is higher. Commenting and resharing seems to happen at a higher rate here (so far.)” ~ Bill Shander

“I’ve had a Facebook account since 2003. It’s time for something more grown up that gives me more control and has a more organic user experience.” ~ Sean Cooper

“The clean user interface of Google+, combined with the lack of distracting elements, or so-called features (such as all of the add-on games and apps on FB that clutter up your stream), that I never use, attract me to Google+. This, combined with the Circles feature, choosing who you share with, are the primary draws.” ~ Scott Davis

“If Facebook and Twitter had a baby, they’d call it Google+.” ~ Olaf Wempe

MyWeku Google+ Pages and Social Media

A third of referrals to MyWeku come from social network sites like Facebook and Twitter. It was, therefore, a natural move for us to connect directly to potential readers on Google+ to increase our readership and to extend the brand further.

Setting up the MyWeku Google+ page was easy. Facebook has over 80 million users whereas Google+ has about 40 million at the moment. Clearly the level of engagement is consequently higher on Facebook. However, that level of engagement could also be described as “noise” for those who want a cleaner, less cluttered and more “adult” social network. That is where Google+ could come into its own. The integration of twitter like features such as “trending topics” in Google+ could also put twitter on their toes. Overall, after a few days of browsing through Google+ and connecting with like minded people it seems this is a social network site that is great to use and here to stay.
