South African Folk-Soul Singer Bongeziwe Mabandla Debuts ‘Phupa Lam’ Video

Only a few votes shy of the top spot, Johannesburg’s Bongeziwe Mabandla was the only South African amongst ten finalists contending recently for the annual prestigious Radio France International Discoveries Award. It’s likely his unique blend of Mbaqanga, Hip-hop and Dub influences are what make him so distinctive within the wave of new South African urban music. A helping hand from mentor and producer Paulo Chibanga (drummer to favourite South African music export bands Tumi and the Volume and 340ml) does not go amiss either.
Just debuted on MTV Base Africa’s ‘Spanking New’, Phupa Lam features award-winning rapper Zulu Boy. It leads Mabendla’s soon to be released debut full-length album, ‘Umlilo’ – ‘fire’ in Zulu and heat in any language!
