Documentary: Nigeria’s Millionaire Pastors (Preachers)

A few months ago we brought you a controversial story on how Nigerian Pastors were making money from their congregations that seemed at odds with the poverty and helplessness that exists in the communities they operate in. A new documentary – Unreported World: Nigeria’s Millionaire Preachers, was aired recently which also touches on the same issues of fraud and exploitation.

The documentary makers reported on the case of Therese, a widow who was told her late husband was a member of a devil worshipping cult and persuaded Therese that God wanted her to sell everything her husband owned. The car (a Mercedes), carpets, a gas cooker, dining table and chairs, clothes, cutlery, crockery and even the curtains were all taken to the church. Therese was told that if anyone found out what had happened God would kill her and her children. Therese ended up sleeping on the streets with her 2 teenage children. Therese’s full story is here.

Seyi Rhodes the narrator of the documentary travelled to Lagos where he reports on the world of Nigeria’s millionaire preachers. Perhaps the most surreal part of this documentary occured when one of the millionaire Pastors, Pastor Dr Fireman (seen to your right in the photograph above posing with his personalised number plated American Hummer), was asked how he could square his wealth and celebrity status with the teachings and life of Jesus. Pastor Fireman responded by stating that he believes God wants him to be rich and denies that Jesus had a humble life. “Jesus was rich and had an accountant who followed him around.”

Please as we have all observed the dangers in being deceived and deceiving others but Christ is our guide and will help all who are true worshipper of the Holy Bible wi lling to accept the disciplines of the Bible and learn from example and be a forgiivng, loving, honest and compassionate Christian. We are all subject to temptations as written in the scriptures as we keep to the planned holidays that help us ban together and disclose secrets and damages that hold people in error and sometimes is unavoidable. also let us note quietly that the love of money is the root of all evil if we can stick to principles ,managing, budgeting, honest savin, Also holding it will help many not fall into snares, luxeries, occultism, extremism, ancients and modern evil that lurk to chain and betray or faith  Amen.

“there was only ever one christian, and he died on a cross” J. Lennon. Drop the dogma and fanaticism, reading your post was like verbal diarrhoea. Money isnt the root of evil, as there is no such thing as evil, money represents so many facets of human personality, mostly negative and selfish as the accumulation of wealth often is. Ive found most christians to be the most unforgiving of the lot, you find the more devout the people the more they are prone to feuds and vendettas. The more religious one is the more prone ot violent behaviour and pointless fervour.

Lovely documentary. Its quite sad but a good reflection of most New generation churches in Nigeria. The so- called Men of God are taking advantage of peoples’ poverty and desire for better life. Though whoever wants to be deceived will be deceived because many people just want the easy life. They just want someone to pray for them and everything becomes alright. They want to own houses and cars without having any serious business. They all want miracles and the Pastors tell them what they want to hear and give them ‘miracles’!

This is senseless, taking advantage of the poorr and desparate. In a well-organized society, there exist an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that ensures that such organizations are first well-classified as non-profits and while tax-exempt they have to report every penny they make and also ensure that non of that revenue is for personal use but rather for the non-profit entity and in the case of it shutting down the monies have to be transferred to other charitable organizations. Along with this is the possibility of audits by the government if they smell smething fishy such as all this nonsense that these so-called pasters are doing in the name of God. Nigeria is a failing state, if not failed (thanks to the stupid government officials), that is why this stupidity can happen there.
