The UN came into existence in 1945 with rather lofty ideas that revolved around promoting world peace. However, anyone listening to Colin
Powell, former US secretary of State, a few years ago presenting “facts” and “figures” to build a coalition to destroy Sadam Hussein’s fanthom and non-existent nuclear weapons knows that the UN’s history is at best checkered.
What I find most interesting about the UN is not the constant posturing and bickering that mostly grown men partake in but the characters who wear their hearts on their sleeves and are not scared to hurl abuse at fellow leaders and promote their own conspiracy theories as to why the
world is in the state it is in.
The Iranian President made known to the world at the latest UN annual general meeting that he does not believe America’s New York Twin towers were brought down by airplanes. Our “beloved” Gaddafi showed the same talent for comedy at the UN as he showed calling his people “rats” and “drug addicts” before they shunted him aside. His speeches were classics and will perhaps now be immortalized for posterity given we will never see him at the UN again (well if David Cameron and his sidekick Sarkosy, the little French man are to be believed). Fidel Castro of Cuba and Chavez of Venezuela were strong representatives for mischief from our Latino quarter of the world.
This year’s pace has been set by the Iranian Leader, Ahmadinejad. It takes a bold or some may want to substitute the word “bold” with another of
their choice, to make the Americans walk out on his musings about 9/11 in New York of all places. For us, armchair viewers of world “politricks” perhaps we will need more of the Gaddafis, Castros and Ahmadinejads to make us feel less like we are watching paint dry listening to some of these leaders.
