Some claim it originated from Australia while others claim it started off as the “lying down” game in England. Regardless of its origins planking seems to be catching on in Africa, notably in South Africa and Nigeria.
Planking can be described as lying face down in a public place, preferably in an unusual location and posting photos on social networking sites such as Facebook for other planking fans to gawp at.
The website PSFK describes the rules as: “you must lie face down, palms flat against your sides, with your feet together and pointing at the floor. Points are awarded for an original location and for the number of spectators and participants involved. You must, of course, have somebody take a photo. Without a photo, you’re just a person lying down. This is planking, described variously as a global participatory art project, the lazy man’s free-running, a “pointless internet craze”, the new flash-mobbing and, in the words of one incensed online commenter, “a sick, pagan pastime”.
Could this be a passing fad? Maybe, but for now the planking fever is spreading and we can certainly understand why. Check out the photos and video below.
