Did Rihanna plagiarise Maurice Kirya’s song, “I will sing”?

A dear friend of MyWeku asked us to listen to a song by Maurice Kirya, a musician we have featured numerous times on here and and who is making waves on the international music scene about “similarities” in his song I Will Sing, from his album Misubbaawa released 14th December 2009 and Rihanna’s California King Bed, from her album Loud, released 12th November 2010.
The similarities revolve around the introductory acoustic guitar arrangement of both songs.

This may be a smoking gun of the theft of creativity and intellectual property from an amazing African musician. Theft from Africa that leaves Africans struggling and non-Africans profiting needs to be exposed for the crime that it is.

I reckon there are strong similarities there. Thing is both songs are great and the lyrics are different. It’s not worth the hassle. At least this way a lot more people get to actually appreciate the composition skills of Michael. Whoever the source is then you know they will always do the same thing to a song, it will not be just a one off.

  I diasagree, i think this is a big deal. It is at the very least worth looking into. I can bet you my bottom dollar that if Rihanna had a whiff of somebody else using part of any song she’s composed her record company will no doubt come hard on the culprit. Why should MK be any different? Please sue her record company. Even if it’s decided the songs are not similar the publicity alone could make MK a fortune. It’s a dog eat dog world out there, sue her!!

    i think it will get MK a lot of publicity and will put not just him, but also Ugandan music in the limelight for a while. Nonetheless, i don’t think suing her or anyone is the way to go. Rather find another way to let the world and Rihanna fans know that she is a couple of years behind a Ugandan artist in terms of music. Facebook, twitter and google+ are good places to start.

This particular case is bigger than Maurice Kirya possibly being ripped-off while others make huge amounts of money. This is a case study in the larger issue of the theft of ideas and intellectual property from incredibly talented Africans. The narrative of the poor African who needs to be saved from their own wretchedness is a lie. Many Americans assume that people all over the world benefit from the same rights and privileges when it comes to copyright laws and intellectual property protection. That is not the case. Many people actually take advantage of that fact to farm for creativity and ideas.
