One man’s art I guess is another man’s graffiti. According to I Really Love Africa the artist commissioned to put up this Zebra themed installation was not pleased when Cape Town Municipal Authoritites mistook the red spray painted stripes on the Zebra as graffiti style tagging and washed it off. Suffice to say the artist was not a happy bunny.
According to the him:
“It is a blatant violation of my art. I was commissioned to make the artwork so how can they just remove it?” “My work is a commentary on the recent passing of the graffiti by-law in Cape Town,” explained the artist, “as I believe too that the by-law itself is not black and white. The fact is that the city wants to completely outlaw the art of graffiti. I deliberately tagged my own artwork in this public exhibition to prove a point to provoke them as I knew they would remove it and they took the bait.”
Ah well mission accomplished then…
