Beyoncé courts controversy with “Black Face” photo shoot

Beyoncé is no stranger to controversy. The musician was recently photographed looking rather pale and faced accusations that she has perhaps gotten into the fuzzy world of skin bleaching.

Now a photo shoot the musician did to mark the 90th anniversary of L’Officiel, a Paris based magazine is causing stirs amongst her fans and fashionistas alike. The March issue of the magazine is themed “African Queen” and pays tribute to the legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti. The magazine gives the rationale behind the “Black” face as “A return to her African roots”. The magazine added that “As for the artistic make-up, the inspiration came from several African rituals in which paint is used on the face.”

A typical BlackFace photo

As usual the musician whose parentage is racially mixed is facing criticisms from those who find the magazine’s cover offensive. Anyone who has followed Beyoncé’s career closely perhaps knows that she is likely to have agreed for the photo shoot to be done not out of mockery to Africans but perhaps more out of making an artistic statement.
