Prince William gets engaged in Kenya

Britain’s Prince William announced his engagement to his long-time girlfriend Kate Middleton at the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy a top Kenyan game reserve famous for saving endangered black rhinos.

William, 28 — the eldest son of the heir to the throne Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana — and Middleton, also 28, became engaged in October while on holiday in Kenya, Clarence House,  the official residence of Charles and his sons said.

“The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton. The wedding will take place in the spring or summer of 2011 in London,” said the statement.

Kate Middleton’s engagement ring is a huge sapphire surrounded by diamonds, last seen in public on the day Charles and Diana divorced in 1996. Asked about the ring the Prince said “It’s my mother’s enagagment ring, so of course it’s very special to me, and Kate’s now very special to me, so it was only right to put the two together,”

His brother Prince Harry, released a statement saying “I’m delighted for my brother, it means I get a sister which what I have always wanted”

The wedding is slated for Summer or Spring 2011.

Congratulations to the Prince and kudos to you for choosing my dear Kenya to honour the young lady

Sorry can’t help it (communist East German upbringing and no respect for royalty) but that’s just ironic given that Tolu Ogunlesi in Next humorfully commented on the prince’s relationship with “Africa” less than a month ago:

“The prince’s interest in Africa is clearly not a mere tweenage fad. He’s been into this continent since like forever. His twenty-first birthday party, held seven years ago at Windsor Castle, was, according to the BBC, “African-themed.” [...] I’m hoping the future king will choose to have his coronation staged in his beloved Africa. Dignitaries – faces painted of course – will arrive at Africa’s International Airport (named after none other than the most famous living citizen of Africa, Nelson Mandela), waving ‘iSpears’ (trust Steve Jobs to cash in on this) and singing ‘God save the king’ in ‘African’. It’ll be like the 2010 World Cup all over again! All we’d need to do in terms of security would be to prevent the Swazi King Mswati III from coming near the new king – we don’t want anyone extolling the virtues of royal polygamy to the head of the Church of England do we?”

Firstly, It’s good to have you on here “HRH” Kat , full of humour but with thought provoking insights as well.

I think Westerners, especially Brits and others who have a colonial connection to African countries can, I feel be put into two categories. There are those who essentially see Africa or treat the continent as they will any where else in the world and those who for whatever reason see the continent as an “exotic” and “wild” place to explore.

I see Prince William as belonging to the latter category, especially given, the “work” he does either on the Lewa Conservancy or elsewhere. This work is often dotted with some of his mum’s interests around philanthropy.

What I’d like to know though is……Do Westerners who fall in the latter category i.e. their interest revolves around the so called “exoticism” of Africa do any harm to the continent or its image, especially given that Kenya is now estimated to increase its tourism by a 10% as a result of the proposal being made there.
