Kulula Air is a low-fare carrier based in South Africa that seems to have mastered the art of geting noticed in a somewhat unconventional way. During South Africa’s Football World cup, the carrier got into trouble for describing itself as the ”Unofficial National Carrier of the You-Know-What”, (2010 football world cup) and referring to “Not next year, not last year, but somewhere in between”.
In June 2010 Kulula launched an advertising campaign in the national press, announcing “affordable flights for everybody” with the exception of the president of the FIFA world cup, Sepp Blatter, who was offered a free seat. Its advertisement stated that the offer is valid “for the duration of that thing that is happening right now”, apparently in reference to the Football World cup tournament held in South Africa at the time.
What I think stands out about this airline though is thier deployment of humour in describing the “anatomy” of thier aircrafts. Sign posts to where the “black box”, “loos” and where specially reserved seats for ”kulula fans” are located are simply hilarious. I wish more airlines could be more brazen and less stuffy.
