Africa’s first high-speed urban train, the Gautrain was unveiled recently in time for South Africa’s World Cup. The train is capable of doing a 100mph/160km.h and is expected to help relieve pressure on other modes of transportation in South Africa.
The Gautrain cost $3 bn (24 bn rand). Construction including tracks and tunnels began in September 2006 and will be completed in June 2011 when an additional 10 stations, covering approximately 80km (50 miles) are added.
