“Fashion has changed and continues to change dramatically over the centuries. Although, fashion designers are largely responsible for some of the more innovative creations, the pace of change we are picking up now has largely been triggered, by an increased publication of African lifestyle magazines and blogs showing off the latest styles and trends”
This is an excerpt, from a feature on the 10 most influential African Fashion Websites that appeared recently on MyWeku. It is all well and good showcasing the laudable creations of fashion designers and other “creative” types and the plethora of innovative publications who report on them. What seems to be missing though is the sort of critical analysis of the industry itself that should play a role in defining and contextualizing fashion from the continent.
It is, therefore, heartening to read about the thoughts of Uduak Oduok, Editor-in-Chief, Labybrille Magazine, an atorney , fashion model and journalist (and Editor-in-Chief of one of the top 10 fashion publications featured on our list of influencers) about why she thinks a Vogue Africa is NOT needed.
In her post she states that “f I have to read or hear one more person or group call for a VOGUE Africa, I will scream! I am irritated and annoyed with the seemingly inferiority complex that seems so innate among many Africans. Read my writing: Africa DOES NOT NEED A VOGUE AFRICA! Even VOGUE knows this”
This is an interesting, thought provoking and heartfelt article that epitomizes the sort of critical thinking that is so often missing from write ups by most of the leading African fashion publications.
