Designer Y Tsai designed this Ostrich Bar Stool, which by the way made it (without flying of course) to the final of the “the most beautiful object in South Africa” contest. The stool apparently comes in the same proportions as a real Ostrich, which i suppose is the closest most people will come to experiencing sitting on the fastest two legged bird on earth.
Lets suspend critical thinking or more accurately bury our heads in the sand for a minute or two! Assume the fluffy seat is a natural liquid repellent and the steel legs do not look as uncomfortable as they do. What we have here is an object designed, using inspiration from a native African bird, that will go down well in any pub or bar. The beady eyes of an ostrich, its stumbling style of walk and its propensity to believe that if it hides its head in sand, when in danger, logically its attacker will fail to see it are all familiar behaviours exhibited in pubs and bars across the globe. For those reasons alone, i for one am willing to give this design a pass. Let’s hope though, that our beloved designers look beyond our wildlife for inspiration. I would hate to see or sit on a porcupine bar stool!
