The “Swirl” Washing Ball

Designs don’t always have to be instant hits; the concept behind them and recognition of the need to contribute to the solution of problems are just as important. Design Affair Studio’s “Swirl” falls into this category.

Swirl was designed to make laundry easier for folks in resource poor areas of the world where washing machines may not be readily available and where enormous time is wasted transporting laundry to and from a far-flung water supply area.

The swirl is in the shape of a ball and washes clothes by rolling the loaded ball over long distances. It is also possible for the “washing ball” to be rolled backwards and forwards in a stationary position.

It is always good to see designs that veer away from the ubiquitous furniture and other home decoration items in favour of designs that aim to solve real world problems.

However, the swirl does raise a few questions? Does the material for the ball built to repel the inevitable dirt and mud when rolled on surfaces? What is the potential cost?
