Tanzanian born David Adjaye is an award winning architect with a passion for photography. David through the Urban Africa Project, a photography exhibition in London (from March 31st to September 5th 2010), takes fans on a voyage of appreciation of the built environment in 53 African cities. As David Adjaye recently stated in an interview with the BBC, his motivation partly derives from a strong desire to draw viewers attention from the ubiquitous African wildlife photography in rural areas to a showcase of the styles and variety of buildings and architecture in African cities.
Africa’s cities are magical places that tell thier own stories. David Adjaye’s Urban Africa project shows just how intricate the cities commercial, recreational, artistic, ancient and modern buildings are. Each city is unique and part of a country’s history. Its inhabitants are often in a delicate balance between exploitation and honorable stewardship. The photographs, over 2000 in total, are detailed in colour and historical commentary, including peculiar and amusing anecdotes and snippets of information.
