The motto “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” is one that resonates strongly with environmentalists. Every argument that has to be made to raise awareness of the damage done to the environment by waste products has been made.
Reducing: Buying in bulk to reduce the amount of packaging, buying locally and repairing what we can.
Reuse: Making more use of reusable bags, buying recycled products like paper and reusing containers.
Recycling: Turning old materials into new again; this may involve turning old books into paper, ground glass into industrial uses and plastic bottles into clothing.
Some have heeded the call and have come up with new methods for reducing, reusing and recycling in the hope of creating a more socially responsible and sustainable environment.
Trashy Bags is a Ghanaian based company that pays workers for every thousand used sachets – popularly known as “Pure Water” (the sachets are used for packaging water usually sold by vendors on the streets of Accra and other African Cities) collected, usually from the streets.
The bags are processed (washed) and used as material for manufacturing briefcases, backpacks, totes and other bags.
Here are a few examples that also demonstrate how we could minimise the environmental impact of our waste by making the right choices!
