For those who have never heard of Banksy, he has been described as the greatest street graffiti artist alive and is thought to hail from Bristol in the UK.
His famous aerosol has been sprayed all over park benches, walls, pavements and buildings across the world.
Even though Banksy has never revealed himself he has become well known and his work has been copied by a few. To some the esoteric cult that was Banksy when he first came to the world’s attention has given way to a more mainstream figure. In the rather edgy and incognito world of underground street artists, going mainstream has strong derogatory tones.
Ever the subversive artist that he is, Banksy is now trying to live out his creative spirit in a new venture unveiled at the Sundance Film Festival recently (January 2010). True to character Banksy remained anonymous at his own screening!
The film “Exit Through the Gift Shop” is “Ostensibly a documentary about Banksy’s relationship with an impressionable French film-maker/stalker, the movie highlights that unquenchable thirst among some people for self-expression. It also explores another side of the equation, when the urge turns into rampant self-promotion.” So far screenings have been sold out in seconds, which bodes well for its release in a few weeks time.
Authenticating all of Banksy’s work has never been an easy task. Some of the work below (some of which he displays on his website) are thought to have been spotted in Bamako and Timbuktu. Enjoy..
