Toluwalase Aliki, a self trained professional Artist was born in Nigeria. Toluwalase’s work and inspiration comes to him naturally and is drawn from issues surrounding Passion; Love, Music, Poetry and what he likes. All these manifest themselves in his paintings.

When asked about the source of his inspiration, Toluwalase told MyWeku that “I am a peaceful person, thus more of my work tends to preach the universal message of tolerance; and the need to love one another and live together in peace. My paintings establishes dialogue about that innate desire of man not to be lonely, but to be loved and cared for, and that longing to trust someone and the wish for that to be reciprocated no matter what or who the person is”

Toluwalase added “I express myself mostly through my elegantly dressed female figures. The female figure gives me more flexibility because I feel it has more movement unlike the male figure which has very few curves. To me the female figure radiates more emotion and I can easily convey my feelings and message through them.

My work is usually rendered in warm colour that I got drawn to over the years, maybe it’s because I live in the tropics. My choice of colours, subjects and simplified forms are borne out of childhood reminiscence and pride for my African background”

Toluwalase had this advice for young aspiring artists “Young artists should always believe in what they are doing, they should try to separate the issue of money from the work they create at the early stage. They should work hard and always strive to produce original works of a high quality. Only through that can their work get the attention of serious art buyers…! They should learn to read books so that they can expand their mind and also learn to use the latest technology  like the internet”.
