Poetry goes electronic, with the Global Poetry System (GPS)

LSPoetry  has been around for centuries. What is new and beginning to have an impact is the use of electronic media in various digital forms such as CDs, DVDs and online databases as a means of getting poetry across to the consumer.

Lemn Sisssay, a poet, artist and author has taken the world of electronic poetry up a notch by setting up an interactive web 2.0 poetry project. Lemn set up the Global Poetry System (GPS) a project that aims to discover and chart the poetry of the world.

As Lemn puts it “The central idea for GPS is for us to identify verse in everyday places. Once identified — be it birthday card verse, statue epitaphs, graffiti or found poetry (that doesn’t realise it’s poetry) — the deal is to put a flag in its location and upload a video, photo, text or audio file to the site’s Google Map. In short, it’s a user-generated world map of poetry”

We think this is a fine idea. The Key to success may lie in partnering with related online and offline organisations to fully test, promote and to embed this idea in the minds of the literary world.

To those who wish to know more there is a good FAQ section on the Global Poetry System site that is useful.
