African Photo Sharing Sites and their connection with Pro Photography

This is our last in the series on African Photo sharing sites. We would like to express our gratitude to the people behind Mokocharlie. We appreciate the time and effort you have taken to share your project, hopes and ambitions with our readers.

One of (we think) most interesting and fun features on the site is Mokocharlie’s “Magazine Front Cover Face Book Application”.

This feature Kwabena tells us is Kwaku’s idea. “He receives photos from members of our face book site, who would like their faces on a magazine or something of the sort. He would then spend several minutes in Fireworks or Photoshop “pimping” those images.

The application itself allows any registered facebook user to make a magazine cover out of any image they choose. Obviously the user is only limited by their imagination and we have some really imaginative users out there. The application can be found at http://apps.facebook.com/mokocharlie.

It is important to note that Pro Photography in Africa is an area that is and will make more of an impact as Africa gets more connected to the internet and the internet begins to do more for Africa. Photo Journalists across the continent are beginning to receive the recognition they deserve as the impact of their photos begin to tell their own authentic stories on photosharing sites and ultimately weave their way into news rooms across the globe. To that end we decided to ask one of Africa’s prominent photo journalists what his thoughts were on photography in general. Nana Kofi Acquah also had this to say about Photo Sharing sites and photo blogging “Photosharing sites and photo blogging is the future. Most critics focus on just the copyright and image theft issues but really, what better way is there for photographers to share and grow? I started shooting for gettyimages because of flickr. I am happy there is a Ghanaian based one. It makes it easier to access and buy images from Ghana. I hope more pro photographers will start contributing to Mokocharlie.com”. See full interview here.

During the course of this series, it was pointed out to us by none other than one of Africa’s most successful serial internet entrepreneurs, Charl Norman that there are indeed other pioneering social media sites in Africa that to varying degrees are involved with facilitating photo sharing on-line such as Zoopy.com. Charl, a South African, is the founder of two of these Blueworld.co.za and Zoopedup.com. Blueworld is the premiere Social Networking Site in South Africa. Zooped.com is “a motoring enthusiast network”.

Charl who also runs the top rated award winning blog bandwidthblog.com has kindly agreed to share his thoughts in this area with us. We will also be asking Charl about his thoughts on other technology related areas in our interview with him. Stay Tuned….
