African Art for the Home – “Township” or “Zongo Art” Projects

Part 4 of our series on African Art for the Home explores the use of “Township” or “Zongo” Arts Projects as a rich source for contemporary African Art décor.

Township’ and “Zongo” Art

Impoverished city dwellers have long shown extraordinary ingenuity in recycling waste materials to produce miniature artworks that exemplify ingenuity. Sculptures made from scrap metal, wire and tins, beautiful baskets woven from coloured telephone wire, items made from glass and other throw-outs: all these have found a place in the art world and many have featured in contemporary art exhibitions. Fun and funky, modern, and ecologically aware and embodying a sense of humour, these pieces add a light to touch to the post-colonial chic interior.
